Whitworth, #10 Eric Allen, #86 Dave Spangle, and #20 Ryan

Heartbreaking Loss - Repeat
PAC-8 3rd Place
01/13/2006
For the second straight season, the UCLA hockey
team finished 3rd at the PAC-8 Tournament. Friday, only
12 UCLA skaters took the ice versus a hungry 19 skaters
for SC'. The Bruins played from behind all game and finally
pulled even at 1:58 of the third period, taking the game
into overtime, and eventually into the fan favorite shootout.
After USC's first skater ran into UCLA's goaltender, Adam
Kubalski, backup Dave Spangle was thrown into the fire and
saved the next shot. Each team scored on their next shooter,
leading to a 2-2 tie in the SO after the first 4 skaters.
Captain Scott Freschet was shutdown trying to go fivehole
against USC's Matt Buttweiler and USC's Shon Smith burried
the game with a nice backhand shot that went in just underneath
the crossbar.
The Bruins then faced Cal-Berkeley (10-3 loss
to Oregon) again for the 3rd place game the next day. Both
teams started off slow but the game became a scoring affair
as the Bruins triumphed 11-6.

Tough Series Split w/ #11
Long Beach State
02/04/2006
Thursday's game saw 2nd Yr. forward Dave Spangle make a
return to net after not playing goalie in over 6 years due
to the injury of number one Adam Kubalski and class conflicts
with backups Steve Brennan and Brian Schuster. The game
was close for two periods (2-2 tie after one and 5-3 LBSU
after two) but the Bruins were eventually worn down and
the game put out of reach half way into the third en route
to an 8-3 loss. UCLA bounced back as everyone knew they
could as they immediately took a 2-1 lead after the first
period. The Bruins allowed LBSU to get back into the game
with consecutive penalties and were tied 3-3 after two periods.
But the return of number one goalie Adam Kubalski settled
the team down and solidified a win with a 3rd period shutout
to lead the Bruins to a 6-3 victory over LBSU. |

#30 Ben Jewkes of Walla Walla |
Two Steps Forward and One
Back - Weekend Setback
01/29/2006
Despite plenty of effort the puck didn't find the back
of the net due to the outstanding play by Walla Walla netminder
Ben Jewkes on Saturday night at the Pickwick Ice Center
in Burbank. Followed by a persistent forecheck and gritty
effort by Walla Walla, the Bruins weren't able to come back
from a five goal deficit early on, and lost 6-2. This snaps
UCLA's 8 game win streak at a crucial time. The Bruins hope
to rebound next week vs #11 LBSU. |

ACHA Rankings #4
01/29/2006
In spite of riding an 8-game winning streak
during the last two ranking periods UCLA fell to 13th in
the latest ACHA Division II West regional ranking, released
earlier this week. The Bruins, who have been ranked as high
as 5th this season, have dropped from 10th to 13th during
this streak, despite the fact that two of their wins came
against 6th-ranked USC. UCLA will face a tough LBSU team,
ranked 11th, in a pair of pivotal games if the Bruins have
any chance of hurdling a couple teams into the 10th spot.

a berth with last weekend's wins over Washington. Despite
having to forfeit five wins thanks to an ineligible player,
the Bruins still have an 8-6 record in conference play.
UCLA will travel to Eugene, Ore., for the tournament, to
be held on Feb. 10-11. The Bruins' first-round opponent
has yet to be determined.

UCLA Begins 06' Undefeated w/ Weekend Sweep of
UW
01/15/2006
The Bruins kicked off 2006 by extending their

early 4-0 lead. Martin Galstyan added another hat trick,
Brad Whitworth notched his first goal of the season, and
goaltender Adam Kubalski turned in a solid effort in an
8-1 victory. The following night, the Bruins had to overcome
penalty trouble as they entered the third period with a
2-1 lead, but a pair of shorthanded goals, as well as an
outstanding goal from Jake Gunn, helped cement a 6-2 win. |

Fullerton Scrimmage Success; Cal Trip in Sights
10/13/2004
The Bruins looked good in uniform Tuesday as they defeated
Cal State Fullerton 10-2 in a scrimmage. The coach and players
alike agree that the team has a lot of talent visible, but
just needs some time and a little more practice to pull things
together and reduce sloppyness in the defensive and offensive
zones. The season opens Friday with two road games versus
the defending Pac-8 Champion Cal Berkeley.

putting a much needed spot light on a lesser known, but tremendously exciting sport that UCLA is proud to contend in.
